A few months ago I came up with the idea of creating a Turquoise Flamingo collection, it was a few sketches in my notebook and some very casual browsing at fabrics. Within about a week I had become a little bit obsessed with wanting to make this collection actually happen so I decided to talk to my friend Rory about using Fundit.ie to help me out. He was already very familiar with Fund it, having used this crowdfunding website for his band, Ten Past Seven. After a few chats in the shop, I decided to just go for it.
I contacted Fund it and within a week or two my project was live on their website and within hours I had my first donation from Lorna Dollery. No surprise there, Lorna has always been there to lend a helping hand from the first time we met through this amazing blogging world. Every morning that followed, I anxiously checked how my project was doing. I was really blown away by the generous donations that were quickly helping me reach my target and surprisingly I hit my target a few days before the deadline.
The Icon Collection will launch on 1st December (if all goes to plan!) and the launch night is going to be a really magical night. Leona and Jill from Le Chat Noir are currently helping me organise it and we're all so excited about the evening. While we are busy with the launch night, Fiona Ryan and Rhona Flynn are busy turning my designs into beautiful, handmade pieces.
I'm also really looking forward to donating 10% of the dress collection profits to the S.H.A.R.E fundraising campaign on Christmas Eve. It has always been a charity I have supported and I was even part of the committee when I was 17.

Ok so I can now reveal the super secret exciting news! Drumroll...
Turquoise Flamingo will be launching it's very own dress collection this December!!! Let me tell you a little more about it.
The Icon Collection
It's a new dress collection inspired by two fashion icons of the past - Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot. Each design has 14 dresses made in varying colours and sizes, altogether making 28 dresses in the collection.
As the owner of Turquoise Flamingo, I wanted to create my own collection, taking the inspiration from all the vintage clothing I work with, in particular iconic pieces which I believe are portrayed perfectly through these two women. The dresses have already been designed and the fabrics have been chosen. The next step is to raise the money to buy the materials and work closely with a seamstress and a pattern cutter to make theses designs into a real collection for people to purchase, wear and enjoy. The dress collection will be scheduled to launch at the start of December 2011.
Here's the tricky part...I need to raise the funds to make the The Icon Collection happen. So I'm asking the public. My project is live on FundIt.ie and my target is €1000. Whether you're a vintage lover or you just want to help out, your sponsorship will be greatly appreciated. There's also rewards given to anyone who contributes to say a little thank you. All funds raised will go towards the materials needed to create this collection and the skills of an experienced seamstress. And last but not least, 10% of all the sales from the collection will be donated to SHARE in the run up to their Christmas fundraising.

Exciting stuff is happening at Turquoise Flamingo at the moment. A vintage wedding collection will launch in a few weeks and there's another top secret project in the pipeline at the moment that I just cannot wait to reveal. Oh the excitement! Last night the Mad Men Vintage Affair was held in the Crane Lane. It was an amazing show and the girls at Le Chat Noir pulled it all together brilliantly. Well done Jill and Leona! x

Here's the most recent dress I fell in love with in the shop and I'm gonna find it very hard to part with this one. Sniff sniff!
To keep me distracted though I now have a few pieces for sale in the store from Lil Reds Boutique. The pieces are mostly made from Lego, such as the awesome Lego Gameboy brooch (you can see it below) as well as other random materials including my favourite piece, the Scrabble NERD necklace, it's so cute! So The 80's Glam Metal N ight with Ill Eat your Face went brilliantly. Many, many Electric Lemonade cocktails were had a few lightning bolt cupcakes too and Ill Eat Your Face even drew a crowd to the window outside while the rest of us were squeezed inside playing air guitar!

So here are the photos from 'A Hard Day's Night' with Circus Cat. Yet again, another successful party held in the store and the planning of the next one is already happening! The theme was 60's so as you would imagine there was a lot of beehives, mini skirts and even a few tie dye hippie dresses thrown into the mix! Circus Cat, another local Cork band rocked the shop and we all had a little dance and drank some lemon drop cocktails! It was lots of fun!

As you might have guessed, it's a 1960's theme, that means Lemon Drop cocktails, cake pops, mini skirts, go-go boots, pschedelic prints, The Stones, The Beatles...you get the idea! Turquoise Flamingo will be closing until 4pm on Friday as the city centre is being closed off for the visit. We will stay open til 7pm and if you pop in there'll be "high tea" treats in store to nibble on while browsing!

This is my May window display, one display away from being extremely summery! I made the kite myself out of recycled wallpaper and some twine and when I saw the colourful hula hoops I knew I had to have them for the window!

Summer is really starting to kick in, and the store is moving with the seasons quite well. Plenty of playsuits and denim shorts are now in store and just yesterday my much anticipated order of vintage sunglasses arrived. So I spent a few hours in front of the mirror trying on lots of pairs and settled on an 80's black and gold pair for myself...and then it rained and rained yesterday but I'm staying positive about how much I'm gonna use them!

Last, but DEFINITELY not least, I got the news a few days ago that I am featured as Boutique of the Month in Vintage Life magazine, a relatively new international magazine! I am so delighted and eagerly waiting for my copy in the post. If you want to pick up a copy, click here or if you live in th UK the magazine is available in WH Smiths. In preparation for Le Chat Noir Vintage Fair being held on the 7th and 8th May, a vintage photoshoot took place last week in Peacock and Ruby. My good friend Soracha modelled a really pretty floral 1960's dress and Miss Daisy Blue took part also with some really stunning pieces. Here's a few of the shots of Soracha. The dress is available in store for €52 and the brown leather clutch for €15. The shoes have already been snapped up!

Playsuits seem to be in high demand right now and I can understand why. Besides the obvious cute factor, they're also quite versatile and have the built in shorts so there's no fear of any flashing when you're hit with an unexpected Spring breeze! There's a range of playsuits available in store and can be bought with a colourful silk scarf for just €30

I'm always adding more to the store and love how it's really starting to look more colourful coming into the summer months. I now have some pretty vintage bunting hanging on one of the walls, designed by Alice Halliday and her sister Libby. You can order some of this bunting in store, it's only €5 per metre, and is made up of recycled and vintage material. So pop in, have a look and purchase some adorable decoration for your bedroom, living room or garden! I love it!

So it's been a little too long since my last post but a lot has been going on here in the store. Firstly there was the Vintage Hoedown last Wednesday. So. Much. Fun. Aisling and John from John Blek and the Rats really made the night, they didn't stay on the window display/stage for too long so most of the evening was spent dancing around them in our cowboy (or indian!) gear drining sangria and munching on Wagon Wheels! The shop was quite full but I had lots of help being the host with Louise and Steph behind the counter too! Here are some of the photos...

Lots more stock arrived over the past few days that I have been eagerly waiting for, lots of summer skirts, silk scarves, playsuits and cute colourful blouses for the girls. And lots of Western shirts (yes, the obsession is still going strong!), cardies and sports t-shirts for the boys.

My good friend Andrea surprised me with a visit to the store yesterday and we had lunch together.

Andrea has her own store in Kilkenny, called Peaches Boutique. I was recently at her opening night and got to see her beautiful store and stock, I wanted so many pieces in there! I'll be changing the window display this week, I have a few summery ideas but I think I may leave them for May, June and July. It's hard to come up with something in these in between months but I think I have a good concept coming together, check it out by the end of the week.

Ever since I have been organising A Vintage Hoedown with John Blek and the Rats which is happening next Wednesday in the store I have become worrying obsessed with everything that has a hint of western style, anything "Cowboys and Indians"catches my eye, I've been scanning the tv for old Western films and I have been trying on all the tassles, suede, check and gingham in the shop in the past week. I'm trying to get my hands on vintage red cowboy boots but it's a tough one as I'm being a little bit specific! Anyone seen a pair around?

Have you seen this new ad for Jacob's? It's a little bit over the top for a biscuit ad but I have to say I love the styling of the whole thing. It's Alice in Wonderland meets Katy Perry's 'California Girls'. I would love to do a photoshoot for the shop along the lines of this, just minus the giant biscuits!

So I've been thinking and planning about different types of events to hold in the store for the past few weeks now. And the first one is happening on Wednesday 30th March and it's gonna be GREAT!

A Vintage Hoedown with John Blek and the Rats

Basically it's going to be a Western themed evening in the store with music from John Blek and the Rats (my favourite Cork band!), cowboy style cocktails, nibbles like Wagon Wheels and pretzels and if I manage to get my hands on a hay bale or two, that would be awesome!

I hope all the guests dress slightly in the cowboy style, I'm thinking anything gingham, denim, check, leather, suede, tassles and so on! I will be donning my cowboy boots for sure anyway!

And of course, there's plenty of pieces in the shop that you can pick up that will definitely have you looking like a real cowboy!

Another busy week in my world! The shop has been quite busy this week which is great and had a bloggers meeting last night, which was lovely! Apologises for the lack of chairs girls! That strawberry tea was delicious though :)

A few ideas and plans are really coming together, mainly to do with the shop, but of course! I shall reveal all soon.

So I was delighted to be featured in Image Interiors magazine. It was a piece on where to eat, drink, sleep and shop in Cork and the store had it's own paragraph AND photo, I was so happy!

Only discovered another Cork fashion blogger the other day and then had the pleasure of meeting her last night at the meeting, Dominika of Fashion Philosophy, she's super cool and super stylist! Wish I was that cool when I was 16!

I may seem like all I talk about or photos I post have to do with the shop. Well that's kinda my life now. I work here (yes I'm in here right now!) 6 days a week. So when I'm not in the shop, I'm either out with friends or going to the drive in cinema(it's awesome, you need to go if you live in Cork!). And when I'm not doing any of the above I'm sitting at home thinking about the shop! Either planning the next window display, where next to source my stock or coming up with ways to promote it. So excuse the fact that most of my blog posts are shop related, that's just the way it's gonna be!

So I changed my Valentine's window this week to this...

It's an 'Alice In Wonderland' inspired window display. I thought this would be a good choice for the start of Spring. It's colourful, it's a garden tea party and it's fun! I especially like the little quote written in window marker along the bottom of the window "...tumbling down the rabbit hole..."

More shop related news...Image Interiors magazine is out tomorrow and I already got a sneaky peek at a piece called '48 hours in Cork' and my store is featured in it and I am so flattered to be even mentioned in this magazine. It was my bible in college when I did Interior Architecture! I will post the piece in the next few days.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to take my camera on a little adventure at the weekend. I'm in need of a trip to the seaside to take some photos in my little red car.

DELIGHTFUL NEWS! Turquoise Flamingo is now stocking accessories by designer Alice Halliday in the store. Her pieces are beautiful! Florence Welch from FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE seems to think so also, she wore a cape designed by Alice on her Australian tour!♥

Other shop related news, I changed my window display yesterday, it's an 80's/ Valentines/ Prom Night theme, lots of pinks and reds! Just wish I had a tacky flashing neon cocktail sign to finish it off!

Badly need to do an outfit post soon, maybe one in the shop, since I do spend 6 days a week there! Ooh, maybe I'll do an over the top 80's prom night one! My new hair crimper will only be delighted!

So the official Turquoise Flamingo Store Launch Party was last night. To be honest I was a little nervous about it beforehand but the whole night was a great success. Glittery cupcakes, bubbly champagne, family, friends, bloggers, balloons, Louise (who works here) with her 80's sequins jumper, a little speech, photos and some live 80's music from The Shamones. A recipe for success I suppose!

Thanks to everyone who came along to it, hope ye all had a good night!
The shop was surprisingly not too messy and post-party looking this morning and a leftover cupcake was had with my morning tea, yum!

Happy Women's Little Christmas everyone! Also, since my last post was a week ago, Happy New Year!
So a fellow blogger Lola Dee did a post summarizing her 2010, which I thought was such a lovely little story. I must say I was well impressed also by the amount of things she did, goals she achieved, places she'd been to in 2010, Well Done Lola Dee!
Sooo, I'm going to do a similiar post, and I'm also going to tell you about my little personal project I started on my 26th birthday in November, it's called '26 Things Before I'm 27' and I owe all the credit to Elsie's blog, A Beautiful Mess.
Instead of having New Years resolutions that I usually break anyway by February, I decided the day before my birthday to do/achieve 26 things before I turned 27. Before I delve into this list, let's recap on my year...
I set up my website in January, TurquoiseFlamingo.com, which probably was one of the most exciting starts to any year so far!
I went tobogganing in the snow with my sister and mum, I cycled more, I fell in love with Glee, I did a photoshoot at a closed down petrol station near Kinsale,I said goodbye to my best friend as she moved to London, I missed my sister while she was in california for the summer, I fell in love with Sunday's Ice Cream Parlour in Kinsale,
I learnt how to use photoshop (still learning!), I used my camera...a lot! I was part of a book club, I sang a song at a party (whether it was in tune is a different story!), I went to funderland three times!
I went camping, I got a sewing machine, I made this video, I bought and started learning to play the ukulele, I helped my friend Kate photograph a wedding, I went to London to visit my friends and source some vintage pieces, I watched way too many 80's movies, I made way too many cupcakesI went to see Lady Gaga in concert, Paolo Nutini's secret gig in the Crane Lane, Electric Picnic and many many friends gigs I let my hair grow (finally), I bought lots of vintage, I tried being a vegetarian for a week, I fell in love with chili hot chocolate, I can embarrassingly say I got Bieber fever, I sent a Turquoise Flamingo dress to Imelda MayI spent a weekend at a trad festival, I held a Turquoise Flamingo Swap Party in Bunnyconnellan's in Myrtleville, I helped participate in the Decade's Festival, I danced my socks off at my cousin's wedding in my favourite vintage number, I carved my first pumpkin, I threw a Halloween party and dressed as a pirate, I kept a big big secret for two months and then spilled the beans on facebook one night "Ok I couldn't hold it in for another second! A Turquoise Flamingo vintage store will be opening very soon in Cork City!!! Expect pieces like on the website and more! Ladies and Mens!OH THE EXCITEMENT!!!"And then in one week I (and lots of family and friends) painted, bought, designed, wallpapered, hung, tagged, drilled, glued, cleaned the shop together with these results...

So there you have it, that was my 2010. What an amazing year!!! My 2011 will involve a lot of my '26 Things Before I'm 27' as i have just crossed off 4 on my list since my birthday, two of them were...

So Turquoise Flamingo opened its doors on Wednesday. I can't believe I got the place done up in one week, I couldn't have done it on my own obviously, my family pitched in lots and I spent a full weekend painting with my friends Seb, Peter, Caen and Sarah and then Monday and Tuesday was all about getting the clothes rails ready and then ironing, steaming, hanging, tagging etc with the help of my Mum and my friends Sarah and Laura. If ye read this, thank you so much everyone! xoxo
The location is No.4 Washington Street in Cork city. For those who don't know the spot, it was the previous location of a well known record store called Plugd Records. So Turquoise Flamingo has big shoes to fill.

So as you can see I had a bit of work to do in one week! After many hours with the helping hands of my friends and family painting, wallpapering, cleaning, hanging, tagging and so on...

And I am so happy with the results! I opened my doors on Wednesday and have been adding my own little personal touches to it since. I have so many ideas for the place and can't wait to get cracking on them in the new year.

1. It is unique. You can be pretty much certain that no one else will be wearing the same thing as you, unlike "that dress" from Penneys!

2. It has a story to tell. A 1950's dress for example, imagine it's journey through the past 6 decades!

3. It is good, if not great quality. Think about it, it has to be to have survived through the years.

4. It can be fun. Pick a decade, and dress in that decade! It doesn't have to be fancy dress, just leave the wig at home.

5. It doesn't have to be "in fashion". Vintage itself is always "in fashion" so you never have to worry about it being dated...because it already is! Oh and being environmentally conscious is also in fashion so it's really a win win when it comes to vintage!

I heard today on the radio that Brandon Flowers new album is called 'Flamingo'

The Turquoise Flamingo Swap Party was held in Bunnyconnellan's, the cottage by the sea in Myrtleville on Tuesday and I can report that it was a great success! There was tea, coffee and cupcakes aplenty and as soon as the turquoise ribbon was cut the swapping began. Everyone arrived with a bag of unwanted clothes and everyone left with a bag of "new" clothes and a smile! Swap success!

It's my 100th blog post!!! To be honest at the start I really didn't think I would keep it up for long but 99 posts on I still really enjoy telling you my news, showing you pictures from what's going on in my little world and sometimes just rambling on about something vintage, turquoise or flamingo related!

I recently received an email from a customer Naomi who bought the 'Hot Hudson' dress from Turquoise Flamingo and she attached this photo of her wearing it, she's the lovely lady in the yellow, isn't it stunning on her?! I love that I have taken the personal approach when it comes to my business, that way people tend to feel comfortable sending me these kind emails and it is definitely my favourite part of the business.

We had an amazing time at Lady Gaga's concert on Wednesday. She sang everything we wanted to hear, her outfits were AWESOME and the whole show was just spectacular! She's my hero! As you can see we had lots of fun dressing up Gaga-inspired, although I'm still trying to see how my sister's panda bear obsession is related to Miss Gaga! Although she did tell us during the show that she loves how all her fans are so original. A personal thumbs up to my sis methinks!

Well, firstly I wouldn't consider myself an expert at this yet but I'm getting there!

It can be quite hard to determine which era a piece is from but I do have a few tips that may help you figure out if that pretty dress you have in your wardrobe is from the 50's or the 60's...or maybe is it an early 70's piece? Let's find out!

1. The style

It can be difficult to determine a vintage piece's birth just by style but after a while you can get the hang of it. The dresses in the 1950's and early 1960's can be quite similar but the big difference is that design was a lot freer in the 1960's. The A-line style was very popular in the 50's which spilled into the 60's also but the introduction of the 'mini' and pinafore dresses in the 1960's changed everything and made a clear division between the two decades. The 70's was all about the long maxi dresses, as well as flared trousers, platforms, ethnic style clothing and anything 'disco'. The 1980's was all about power dressing for women so lots of padded shoulders and business suits. There was also a lot of glitz and glamour in the 1980's, extravagant ball gowns and meringue style dresses. Think Madonna meets Princess Diana! And these days the 1990's is pretty much considered vintage and I suppose in a few months it technically will be, so for the 90's think Nirvana meets The Spice Girls!

2. The label (if there is one)

A label on the piece can be a great clue. Google it! A lot of the time you will find out the date of the piece this way.

3. Small details and construction

The older the piece, the more likely it will be hand-sewn so newer vintage pieces often have straighter stitching etc. Hemlines were also thicker before the late 1970's which is a good indicator.

4. Material

Like style, it takes time to determine the age of a vintage piece just by it's material but there are generally a few materials that go hand in hand with certain decades. Lycra was big in the 80's, polyester in the 60's and 70's and cotton and rayons in the early 60's and 50's.

So there you have it, follow these few tips and you'll more than likely be able to date any vintage piece (and I don't mean dinner and a movie!)

Instead of showing you the inside of vintage shops and warehouses in London, I decided to show you how the other stuff on my trip went. It involved driving to Rosslare harbour and catching the sunrise, a big boat trip over the Irish sea, a long train journey with lots of coffee, cheesy snacks and cheesy music on my ipod, browsing in pretty shops (check out the flamingo wrapping paper!), a walk in the park, chilling out at the top of Primrose Hill, my friend Gill petting some Banksy dogs, vintage car spotting (there's my Red Ruby's cousin in a mint colour!) and finally the long trip home again.

On the Turquoise Flamingo side of things, I had a very successful shopping trip so sit tight for a few days to pick up some knitwear, party dresses, faux fur and pretty hats from the store!

Apologises for my lack of posting the past few days. I was at my cousin's wedding in Kerry and between preparations, the actual wedding day and recovering the next day I had a very busy few days! Lily Allen. I have to say I didn't really like her at the start, I don't know exactly why, to be honest, it could have been a bit of jealousy, but I'm well and truly over that now because I love her! It's my first year attending Electric Picnic and I have already started my preparations (yes I'm excited and a little bit too organised!) I had a lovely shiny pair of polka dot wellies but they have fallen apart on me (I think I've had them 7 years) so I am on the lookout tomorrow for a new brightly coloured pair, preferably ones that have the colour turquoise featured somewhere on them! Also if I have time tomorrow I'm going to do a bit of thrifting in secondhand shops around Cork for a few bits to bring with me, I have a few ideas in my head of what I want but just in case my thrift trip isn't successful I'm going to keep my lips sealed until tomorrow. But I'm thinking along the lines of denim, lycra, sequins and old band t-shirts. Wish me luck! x

I just checked out the new clothing line by Madonna and her daughter Lourdes. WOW! It's got some really funky 80's inspired pieces (obviously! the collections called Material Girl!) The line is on the button as regards the current trends with lots of grunge glamour and tartan. I especially love the studded black leather jacket. I HAVE to have it!

Ok so I'm very excited about dressing up this Friday for the Decade's Festival but I'm finding it really hard to settle on just two decades! Originally I was going to go 60's on the Friday night and 80's on the Saturday night but the glamorous 50's keep popping into my head and it's not often that you can dress head to toe in a certain decade and then I saw this 1950's Dior dress so I have pretty much made up my mind...I think!

Red lips, layers of eyeliner and mascara and victory rolls in my hair just like good ol' Dita!
